NC TEACH @ NC STATE
NC Teach is an alternative teacher licensure program for people who have earned a bachelor's degree but have not earned teacher certification. NC State seeks to fulfill its land grant mission through distance education initiatives that address crucial needs for the state of North Carolina and its people. NC TEACH @ NC STATE is an outstanding example of that commitment. The program offers an accelerated plan of study that focuses on teacher success and retention. Dr. Grant Holley, Alternative Licensure Director, attributes its success in training and retaining outstanding teachers to several factors:
- A summer academy before NC TEACHers enter the classroom introduces candidates to the public school environment through the basic principles of classroom management, lesson planning, and educational psychology.
- Students are admitted to the program in cohort groups. This provides peer support as they proceed through the plan of study.
- Classes are designed and taught so the material presented parallels the teachers’ progress through the program and their experience in the classroom.
NC TEACHers are provided with a mentor who has successfully completed the alternative licensure process and has classroom experience. Beginning in May of 2007, NC TEACH @ NC State will be looking to add new cohorts of teachers in the high needs areas of Lee, Cumberland, and Nash counties. With the addition of these sites, it is our goal to be providing over 200+ new teachers every year in the areas of science, math, Social Studies, English, Spanish, and French.
